Linux traffic Control: Overview

• Three building blocks: qdisc, class and classifiers

• Hierachical bandwidth management

  • a root qdisc attached to a device owns all the B/W
    • can only have one root qdisc per device
  • certain types of qdiscs can have children
    • Refer to these qdiscs as classfull
    • refer to others as leafs
    • note classfull qdiscs can also be leafs
      • incredible flexibility
